Frio é nova ameaça a crianças em zonas de conflito no Oriente Médio

O Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância (UNICEF) alertou que, com a aproximação do inverno, milhares de crianças em zonas de conflito no Oriente Médio estão sob ameaça.

A agência da ONU corre contra o tempo para fornecer roupa, cobertores e suprimentos de inverno, mas destaca que enfrenta uma lacuna de 60 milhões de dólares – o que poderia deixar 1,5 milhão de crianças expostas ao frio.

Temperaturas negativas e tempestades de neve vão agravar as dificuldades enfrentadas pelas famílias afetadas por conflitos. No Iraque, Síria, Palestina e em países vizinhos, estas famílias já estão lutando para sobreviver com o mínimo.

Muitos foram deslocados pela violência e vivem em acampamentos ou abrigos improvisados, com pouca proteção contra as temperaturas de inverno. Depois de anos de conflito, deslocamento e desemprego, as pessoas não têm recursos para comprar roupa e aquecimento adequado.

Segundo o diretor-geral da agência para a região, Geert Cappelaere, a saúde das crianças é debilitada devido à desnutrição e aos poucos cuidados de saúde. A hipotermia e infecções respiratórias são uma séria ameaça. Se não forem tratadas, as crianças podem morrer.

Antes do inverno, o UNICEF pretende fornecer, kits de roupas de inverno para mais de 800 mil crianças em toda a região, e para as famílias que foram deslocadas pelos recentes conflitos.

A agência da ONU também vai proporcionar espaços amigáveis para crianças, aquecimento em escolas e cobertores térmicos. Se as escolas não forem mantidas quentes, espera-se que a taxa de desistência aumente.

Até agora, a agência recebeu menos de 20% dos 73 milhões de dólares necessários para cobrir as necessidades de inverno das crianças afetadas pela crise na região.
