Dia Nacional de Combate ao Fumo: metade das pessoas que fumam morre de doenças associadas ao cigarro

O tabaco mata um em cada dois fumantes e continua sendo uma das principais causas de morte evitáveis, de acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). É uma droga legal que vitima pessoas mais do que acidentes de trânsito, a Aids e o suicídio juntos.

A data de 29 de agosto é lembrada como o Dia Nacional de Combate ao Fumo. Ela foi instituída em 1986 com o objetivo de conscientizar e de mobilizar a população sobre os riscos decorrentes do uso do cigarro. Dados do Instituto Nacional de Câncer (Inca) revelam que o tabagismo causa mais de 10 tipos de câncer.

“Os cânceres de pulmão, de pâncreas, de laringe (cordas vocais) e faringe (pescoço), de fígado, de estômago, de bexiga e de rins, além de leucemia mielóide aguda, são alguns dos que têm relação direta com o hábito de fumar”, alerta o rádio-oncologista Carlos Rebello, do Instituto de Radioterapia Vitória (IRV).

Um levantamento realizado pelo Instituto Nacional do Câncer dos Estados Unidos com quase 300 mil pessoas concluiu que quem fuma menos de um cigarro por dia tem 64% mais riscos de morte prematura do que os não fumantes. Já entre os que consomem de um a 10 cigarros por dia, o risco é até 87% maior.

“Não importa a quantidade de tabaco que é consumida, pois não existe um nível seguro de exposição à fumaça do cigarro. Fumar, mesmo que esporadicamente, continua sendo a causa de um grande número de mortes relacionadas ao câncer”, alerta o médico.

A pesquisa, publicada na revista médica JAMA Internal Medicine, analisou 290 mil norte-americanos com idades entre 59 e 82 anos ao longo de sua vida. Os dados mostram que as pessoas que fumam menos de um cigarro por dia têm 9 vezes mais risco de morrer por câncer de pulmão. As que fumam entre um e 10 cigarros por dia multiplicam a probabilidade por 12.

Este segundo grupo também tem possibilidade seis vezes maior de morrer por doenças respiratórias e 1,5 vez mais propensão a ter doenças cardiovasculares. Os resultados foram similares entre homens e mulheres, concluiu a pesquisa. A maioria dos participantes que diziam fumar menos de um cigarro por dia havia consumido um número maior em períodos anteriores.

De acordo com a OMS, um bilhão de mortes em todo o planeta devem ser provocadas pelo tabaco até o final do século 21.
