Os príncipes ingleses William e Harry lembram nesta quinta (31), de forma privada, sua mãe, a princesa Diana de Gales, cuja morte ocorrida há 20 anos comoveu o mundo e mergulhou o povo britânico em um luto coletivo sem precedentes na história do Reino Unido.

Os príncipes, netos da rainha Elizabeth II, decidiram passar esta data recolhidos, após homenagear sua mãe em um recente documentário no qual falaram de seu legado e personalidade, e mostraram fotos inéditas da família.

Muitos britânicos se aproximaram hoje do Palácio de Kensington, onde a princesa residia em Londres, para depositar flores, cartões e ursos de pelúcia, como forma de manter vivo o seu legado de solidariedade e de lembrar sua influência no reinado de Elizabeth II.

Neste dia, não foram tantos os objetos pendurados nas grades do palácio em comparação com 31 de agosto de 1997, data da morte de Diana, quando os jardins da residência se transformaram em um oceano de flores.

“Alegria e tristeza”

O tradicional admirador da família real britânica, Terry Hutt, de 82 anos, conhecido por sempre frequentar os eventos reais vestindo um terno com as cores da Union Jack (a bandeira britânica), compareceu hoje ao Palácio de Kensington para homenagear Diana, a Princesa de Gales. Ele disse à imprensa que está no palácio desde ontem e que a data lhe traz uma mistura de “alegria e tristeza”.

Desde a morte de Diana, Hutt compareceu ao Palácio de Kensignton todos os anos no dia 31 de agosto para homenagear a princesa, uma integrante da família real britânica que ele admirava por  seu trabalho em prol dos desfavorecidos. “Diana foi especial. Ela modernizou a família real. Fez muitas coisas boas”, disse o admirador.

Para ele, pensar nesta data é “pensar em felicidade e em tristeza. Hoje é tristeza, mas ontem William e Harry estiveram aqui e trouxeram muita felicidade”, comentou Hutt.

Os dois príncipes se reuniram ontem com representantes das entidades beneficentes vinculadas à Lady Di e visitaram um jardim criado em memória da princesa, que leva o nome de White Garden, além de terem se aproximado das grades para ver as flores e cartões deixados pelas pessoas.

Além do mito

Uma das melhores amigas de Diana, Rosa Monckton, qualificou a princesa como uma “mulher realmente extraordinária” e uma pessoa que “rompeu barreiras e o mito de ser uma princesa de conto de fadas”, em uma entrevista publicada hoje no jornal The Times.

Há 20 anos o Reino Unido amanheceu com a notícia da morte de Diana – divorciada do príncipe Charles e herdeiro da coroa britânica – em um acidente de carro em Paris, quando viajava com seu namorado na época, o empresário egípcio Dodi al Fayed, que também faleceu.

A tragédia ocorreu na Ponte de l’Alma, quando o carro que transportava a princesa trafegava em alta velocidade em uma tentativa de escapar da perseguição agressiva dos fotógrafos paparazzi, os mesmos que dias antes a fotografaram na França enquanto passava férias com Dodi al Fayed e sua família, que na época era proprietária da famosa loja de departamentos londrina Harrods.

A notícia do acidente, no qual também morreu o motorista Henri Paul, chegou ao Reino Unido por volta de 1h (horário local), quando a princesa ainda estava com vida e hospitalizada, mas se sabia que ela tinha sofrido ferimentos muito graves na cabeça.

A confirmação da sua morte chegou cerca de duas horas depois através de fontes reais, enquanto William e Harry passavam férias com seu pai, o príncipe Charles, e seus avós – a rainha Elizabeth II e o duque de Edimburgo – no castelo escocês de Balmoral.

A partir daí crianças, adultos e idosos, munidos de ramos de flores, começaram uma peregrinação de seis dias até os Palácios de Kensington e Buckingham para render homenagem a uma mulher da qual sentiam uma admiração que beirava a obsessão.

Até o dia do funeral, em 6 de setembro de 1997 na Abadia de Westminster, o Reino Unido viveu seis dias que transformaram a monarquia, que era vista como distante e fria.

A histeria coletiva provocada pela morte de Diana forçou Elizabeth II a romper seu silêncio para viajar da Escócia ao Palácio de Buckingham, de onde saiu caminhando para ver o mar de flores, um ato sem precedentes e que surpreendeu a todos.

Forçada a responder diante de tanta tristeza, a soberana se colocou em frente a uma câmera de televisão e transmitiu ao vivo uma mensagem à nação para manifestar, “como vossa rainha e como avó”, seu profundo pesar pela morte de Diana de Gales.
