Mais de 100 milhões de pessoas sofrem de grave insegurança alimentar, alerta FAO

O número de pessoas sofrendo de insegurança alimentar severa está aumentando no mundo: já são cerca 108 milhões nesta condição, contra 80 milhões em 2015. Os dados acabam de ser divulgados pela Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO). Segundo a FAO, o problema é causado pela dificuldade que determinadas regiões estão tendo para produzir ou ter acesso aos alimentos.

As causas principais são impactos de conflitos e guerras civis, alta nos preços e eventos extremos do clima, como secas prolongadas ou excesso de chuvas. De Roma, o diretor-geral da FAO, José Graziano da Silva, disse que é possível garantir que a população tenha o suficiente para comer todos os dias.

“Isso pode ser evitado. Não podemos evitar uma seca, mas podemos evitar que uma seca se transforme em fome. O Nordeste brasileiro é um bom exemplo disso. Nós sofremos com três anos seguidos de seca e não houve fome, graças às políticas preventivas adotadas pelos governos. O mais assustador hoje é que o que explica grande parte dessas situações de insegurança alimentar aguda são conflitos e desastres naturais”, afirmou Graziano.

Confrontos

Segundo Graziano, quatro países correm hoje risco de declarar situação de fome: Sudão do Sul, Somália, Iêmen e Nigéria. Neste último, a crise alimentar concentra-se na região norte. Ele destacou que há outras nações com insegurança alimentar severa devido a guerras e conflitos. “Quando se juntam conflito e desastres naturais, a situação se torna explosiva. É o caso da Somália e de algumas regiões da Etiópia, da República Centro-Africana e, sobretudo, do Iêmen e da Síria. Nesses lugares, a paz é uma pré-condição para se enfrentar a questão da fome. Sem paz não há segurança alimentar, da mesma maneira que, sem segurança alimentar, não há paz duradoura”, afirmou.

De acordo com o diretor-geral da FAO, os 108 milhões de pessoas que sofrem de insegurança alimentar severa apresentam índice de desnutrição acima do normal e pouco acesso à comida, mesmo com ajuda externa. Sem ações fortes para melhorar a situação, essas populações correm o risco de passar fome com consequências graves.
