OMS diz que epidemia de cólera no Iêmen é a pior do mundo

Nesse período, a epidemia tem se expandido por quase todas as 23 províncias que formam o país, causando 1.300 mortes. “Acreditamos que o número de mortes aumentará”, apontou a OMS em comunicado.

Com o Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância (Unicef) e outras organizações, a OMS está acelerando as ações para deter a doença, registrando todos os focos infecciosos e tentando determinar de que maneira ela se propaga. O grupo também está fornecendo água potável, serviços de saneamento e tratamentos médicos.

A emergência é tanta que a OMS decidiu que as equipes iriam de casa em casa para informar diretamente os moradores sobre as medidas de proteção que devem ser tomadas quanto à purificação da água e o seu correto armazenamento.

Conflito armado

As organizações também pediram que autoridades do Iêmen se esforcem para conter a expansão da epidemia, ainda que os meios públicos sejam escassos por causa do conflito armado que o país vive há mais de dois anos e que fez com que 14,5 milhões de pessoas ficassem sem acesso a serviços básicos.

Os enfrentamentos entre a milícia dos houthis e as forças governamentais, que contam com o apoio de uma coalizão árabe – liderada pela Arábia Saudita e apoiada pelos Estados Unidos -, fizeram o Iêmen mergulhar em uma situação caótica. O país, que já era o mais pobre da região antes do conflito, agora enfrenta uma situação próxima à de fome total em determinadas áreas.

Os combates atingiram ou destruíram vários hospitais e 30 mil médicos e funcionários públicos estão sem pagamentos. “Pedimos a todas as autoridades dentro do país que paguem os salários e, acima de tudo, que ponham fim a este conflito”, enfatizou a OMS.
