Embora a população do país tenha crescido cerca de 1,6 milhão de pessoas entre 2016 e 2017, passando de 206,1 milhões para 207,7 milhões, a taxa de crescimento populacional (0,77%) vem desacelerando, nos últimos anos, em razão principalmente da queda na taxa de fecundidade. Com isso, a projeção demográfica estima que daqui a 26 anos (entre 2042 e 2043), a população vai atingir seu limite máximo (228,4 milhões), e passará a decrescer nos anos seguintes.

As Estimativas de População dos municípíos, divulgadas nesta quarta (30) pelo IBGE, mostram que quase um quarto dos 5.570 municípios brasileiros (1.378 municípios) tiveram redução populacional. Além disso, em mais da metade deles (2.986), as taxas de crescimento populacional foram inferiores a 1%, e em apenas 258 municípios (4,6% do total) o aumento foi igual ou superior a 2%.

A redução populacional concentra-se, principalmente, no grupo de municípios com até 20 mil habitantes (32,5% ou 1.236 municípios). Por outro lado, aqueles com mais de 100 mil a um milhão de habitantes tiveram a maior proporção de municípios com crescimento acima de 1% (45,5% ou 133). Dez dos 17 municípios com mais de um milhão de habitantes tiveram taxas de crescimento entre 0,5% e 1% ao ano. A diminuição de habitantes ocorre com mais frequência na região Sul, enquanto no Norte e o Centro-Oeste estão as maiores proporções de municípios com taxas de crescimento acima de 1%.

Segundo a gerente de Estimativas e Projeção de População do IBGE, Izabel Marri, os resultados do cálculo das estimativas mostram a reorganização da população no território. “ Há uma tendência de deslocamento das pessoas que moram em pequenos municípios para cidades maiores em busca de melhores condições de vida e melhor acesso à educação e ao emprego”, explicou.

A estimativa populacional dos municípios é calculada a partir das Projeção de população dos estados, que leva em conta as taxas de fecundidade, mortalidade e migração, acrescida da tendência de crescimento populacional, verificada pelos Censos Demográficos 2000  e 2010.
