Vírus letal afeta tilápias em três continentes, alerta a ONU

Uma doença altamente contagiosa está se espalhando entre as tilápias, uma das espécies de peixes mais consumidas do mundo. O alerta é da Agência das Nações Unidas para a Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO). O Vírus da Tilapia do Lago, conhecido como TiLV, já foi confirmado em países de três continentes: Colômbia, Equador, Egito, Israel e Tailândia.

A FAO explica que não existem ameaças à saúde pública, mas a doença pode dizimar as populações de tilápia. Na Tailândia, 90% dos estoques do peixe com o vírus morreram. Os animais infectados perdem o apetite, têm diminuição de movimento, lesões nas escamas e problemas de visão.

A produção mundial de tilápia em 2015 chegou a 6,4 milhões de toneladas, com valor estimado de quase US$ 10 bilhões. O comércio internacional de tilápia movimenta US$ 1,8 bilhão por ano.

Vigilância

A FAO recomenda aos países produtores vigilância extra, seguindo os protocolos da Organização Mundial da Saúde Animal, fazendo testes para detectar a possível presença do vírus e a extensão geográfica da infecção e identificando fatores de risco.

A vigilância já começou na China, na Índia e na Indonésia. A agência da ONU explica que, em Israel, estão sendo feitas pesquisas para determinar a taxa de mortalidade dos peixes afetados.

Segundo a FAO, mais pesquisas são necessárias para determinar se pássaros que se alimentam de peixes e mamíferos podem contrair o vírus e se a doença pode se transmitida por tilápia congelada.
